Black Velvet (and Whiskey Peak) from the East, 18 Years Apart

...well, almost 18 years. I first went up Black Velvet (BV) by the BV Canyon route on May 5, 2001, with "Branch Whitney's" hiking group (back then we called him by his real 1st name, he's really a pretty jovial guy on hikes). I've been up BV at least 20 times, by a variety of routes (Mud Canyon may have been the most memorable), but never repeated this specific route till this year, with my good friends Barb and Judy. 10 months after the 2001 trip, I had a freak stroke that destroyed my balance; and 9 months after the stroke, I was again hiking up this canyon to Hidden Peak and Monument.  In early 2018, I suffered a whiplash accident that tore several shunts between arteries and veins, developed pulsatile tinnitus (PT), lost part of my peripheral vision, and once again lost part of my balance. I've rehabbed most balance back, the new vision issue is forever, but I've learned to deal with it.

This trip report contains shots from 2001 (scanned from film camera photos) and a few from other trips, to illustrate some of the crux areas. When I went in 2001, I had hard-vibram-soled boots I intended to break in for a rim2rim trip in the GC in less than a month. In 2019, I had sticky-rubber approach shoes. It was interesting to compare.

BV canyon is so
narrow that a GPS
will not track well.
We went to the ridge
highpoint, then down
to the official BV peak,
which is atop the
rock climber's wall.
We took a short
sidetrip to Whiskey
Peak on the way down.

This is the 1st climby
spot; I hardly noticed
in 2001, despite my
non-sticky boots.

There are lots of
steep slabs, and a
big memory from
2001 was my boots
constantly slipping.
Sticky rubber stops
that.

The middle peaklet

The next obstacle
is the bypass of a
minor peaklet, either
on left (class 2-3)
or R (class 4)
