Amargosa Overlook in Spring Mts, NV

This was at least the 5th time that I have been to the overlook, which is actually a 10144’ subtle peak, on the end of a ridge.  The ridge has a ledge on the south side, and you can walk along for about 2 miles with nearly uninterrupted views. Yet there are some trees on the N side, so there is a little protection should the weather get really nasty.

This is one of my favorite “taper” hikes – you start at ~8600’, and with all the ups and downs, gain only about 2500’ accumulated, so this is a decent hike (with some altitude) the week before a big effort.  We were supposed to head to Shasta a few days later, but alas, were waylaid by other events.

After you leave the Bristlecone Trail (unmarked, intentionally obscured intersection), you hit a faint herd path for the old Bonanza Trail.  When you head up onto the ridge, the trail gradually fades to nothing.

Now we’re at the first viewpoint, looking SW into Wallace Canyon.
