Raven's Balcony and East Bowl of Fire (NV, near Lake Mead), "Fire Cliffs Highpoint"

pics by Harlan W.S. & Susan M.
Feb 27, 2011

I re-edited this page in 2021, adding the "Fire Cliffs Highpoint." Before PeakBagger became so dominant, we would go over all these little lumps on a lark.

The odd extra loop reflects
a rescue of sorts ("r-r-rope!").

The snow-covered peak
at L is now called "South
Gate;" the snow-covered
peak at R is east of Muddy,
and is now called Luxor.

This route has a wide
variation in terrain

Now we approach
what are now called "Fire
Cliffs"

Stuff is about to
get real.

Folks wait to climb a
wall, that used to
be stiff class 3
with lots of holds.
However, conditions
were wet and the
sandstone was brittle...
IMG_2227
...so when Peter
(in red) climbed high,
several holds broke
and left him stranded.
Tom T. had 100' rope,
so I quickly climbed
at left and over to the
ledge above Peter.

Susan M. took this
telephoto, which
foreshortens the
image somewhat.
I then meat-anchored
behind a ledge, and
Peter climbed out.
The next month I was
sent a book to review;
it included this route.
I quickly told the author
it was no longer viable,
and he said "too late
to change the book."
IMG_2232
Now we are heading
SSE by the 794T on
the map, to the ledge
called Raven's Balcony.
IMG_2234
I've gone NE along the
ledges, and am looking
back SE at folks.
IMG_2236
Next I will go to the
rock behind Judy,
which is now called
"Fire Cliffs Highpoint."
IMG_2239
I'm on top of the HP
looking at the group.
My pack, with GPS,
is the gray lump at L,
so this side-trip doesn't
appear on my track.
IMG_2241-2
My aim was to get up
and down this lump before
the other folks finished
break.

The route I took up
involved one step over
crappy rock (10 yrs
later I went back and
was surprised how
easy this was!)
IMG_2246
On the way back I
found this safer crack
route.
IMG_2248
Back with the group
and my gray pack!
IMG_2250
It was such a beautiful
route.
