Martini and Rossi on the Rocks
(Martinez and Rosa Point, DPS summits in CA)

Harlan W S & Jodie S
Jan 10-11, 2015

The daylight was limited and our schedule was tight, so we did each peak, including substantial rests on top, in 7.6 hours. I used my tracks on high resolution DEMs, and just from the verified high and low points, I figure the accumulated gain for Martinez was over 4100', and that for Rosa was over 5100'. By parking at the 4x4 TH for Martinez, we cut down the distance to about 16.5 miles; Rosa was 12+ miles.

Overview map. Jodie stayed
in her jeep, but I was in a
1-person tent. So we picked
campsites where I could set
up easily in the dark. For
Martinez, we were the only
guests at the Pinyon Flats
campsite  (where it was below
freezing at night). For Rosa,
we stayed in Salado Arroyo,
which was free and pleasant.

of the hike above 5000' is
mainly sand, with increasing
amounts of big boulders.

Next day was Rosa. We
took a slight variation on
the DPS A route up, and the
B route back.  The A route
was more pleasant with
a more obvious use trail.

Starting up the 1st wash.
It was humid, and we were
both a bit tired from the
previous day.

our slight deviation from DPS

rather than a loose hill.

it had been sprinkling and

...and now the rain started
in earnest. This is Jodie's famous

from drops of water on the lens.

I was really leg-sore. The jump
was actually a bit better than it
looks, but the camera was looking
down, and I had to get above
the brush.
