McFarland the Hard Way (with 2 other peaks)

I don't normally make pages for local peaks, partly because I wish to keep some of the lesser-known routes from being trampled by the most enthusiatic local hiking groups.  But I figure this route is sufficiently difficult that it will remain unpopular, and the first part is on a well-used trail anyway.  I also have fond memories of when Nick N and I first went this way in 2003.

Expect about 5400' accumulated elevation gain, some class 3+ climbing. The lower part is very brushy in places and tricky to navigate. The descent ridge is very nasty in places with sharp steep loose talus.

The ridge between Bonanza

quite rough, with many
peaklets that do not
show up on the USGS
