Quarantine, Stones and Kismet
Gottlieb Loop, Pinnacle (Lake Mead), Monument and Hidden with Rap, Bridge 50x, McFarland Mojo, Charleston via Devil's Thumb, Fateful Lee Peak -- just some of the other places I went

March-June 2020

I had been getting in shape for a big trip this summer, but a bit of calcium oxalate monohydrate in my kidney altered my plans.  I did lots of tough hikes; here are a few that fell through the cracks.

It wasn't easy to get exercise during quarantine for COVID-19.  On top of all the crap you all went through, I have a "new" neighbor who leaves her big Shar Peis outside to bark. She is a chain-smoker, and gets up at all hours of the night, bringing the dogs outside with her as she smokes. And all hours of the day too, even when it is 107F (Shar Peis have very low heat tolerance, and she leaves them out without water). The slightest noise incites them to bark, bark, bark.  The Animal Control complaint line was closed down through most of quarantine.  I have slept on the floor in the farthest corner of the house away from the dogs, but they still run down an alley and bark and wake me up in the middle of the night, so since the beginning of the year I had to start late in the hotter parts of the day, missing my normal hiking buds.  On a short hike to cache water June 19, I felt a kidney stone travel in an unhappy way. Now I had two annoyances to keep me awake.

Finally in September, after the neighbors had been through mediation and made all sorts of promises she was not willing to keep, Animal Control brought the hammer down, and now they are being fined.  Suddenly they started complying.  The manic dogs still bark a bit while wearing shock collars.

Another operation Sept. 01, and finally I am getting back out. So here's to some good memories that fell through the cracks.

On March 23, Barb
and I did a fun loop
over several peaks, a
route we have taken
many times (collectively!)

On April 03, I went
to Pinnacle, I had been
near there on March 30...

...to climb
Red Needle, a
much more
serious effort.

You can park just east of Pinnacle
002
There is a fairly
modest class 3
route up, but I
went around the
right side and saw...

...This.  No go.

Then I tried here...
no go at top...

Then here, went
around scary corner
just to find big air...

This finally worked.

I got up a few peaks
(like Bridge), but longed
for something a bit
different, so I took the
back way to Monument
and Hidden on May 15.
Red is the route that day.

I went up the "old" way,
visited Murphy Rock,
and rapped down the
west side of Monument
and went up Hidden by
one of my class 4
variations.
m02
I took the wrong route
up from Rainbow Spring,
but got extra nice views.
At L is Sandstone Peak

We've turned sharp R,
and eventually will pass

We eventually go by
that tree, either by
(easier) zigzag to R
then L under a big cliff,
or direct up L.

On June 07, I went up
Bridge Mt for the 50th
time.  Bridge is a safe
place for me, after a
tumultuous week.
b03
Here I was 19.5 years
earlier, before the event
that partly paralyzed my
right leg.

I met Todd's group
on top.

Here they are coming down
b07
They come down the
traditional way. I had
gone up on left, harder.

On June 13, I went up
McFarland by N Canyon.
I had to take 4x4 roads
to avoid the crowds. I was
trying to find my Mojo.

I didn't originally plan
to be shirtless. I screwed
up the first 3 tries because
I put the phone camera on
some weird mode. Paula,
don't do this.

On June 16 I took the
"true" (hard) Devil's
Thumb route up Charleston.
I wasn't rushing, but 3h 22m
to top.

c1
I took a lot of pictures,
but at this point I
put my cellphone
camera in some weird
mode (I have terrible
near vision). I did
sign in, doubters!

No more pics till
I got back down. This
is "rope" -- most
200 lb mason's line--
I took off the scramble
part of the route.
L00
June 21. Ah, my last
significant hike of the year.
Two days before
I felt a kidney stone move,
and thought I'd knocked
it free on this hike.

About 200' below the top,
Judy badly injured her
leg and shoulder from
rockfall.  We found a good
shoulder-wary route down.
I took two more hikes in
the area, kidney getting
worse with each one.
