Troy Peak, NV (LVMC trip to Grant Range)

I first visited the Troy Range on August 31, 2003.  That trip was memorable for two reasons: 1) though we went over the rugged ridgeline, we actually missed Troy Peak, and 2) my car was stolen from its parking place in Las Vegas.  This time we took a less tiring hike, but actually went up Troy, and my car was still happily parked when I returned to Las Vegas.

There is a decent camping spot about 0.3 miles southeast from the gate at the end of Scofield Canyon Road (that is, 0.3 miles before you get to the gate at the end of the road).  For instructions to the start of the trailless route, look here.

As legend goes, this was one of John Muir’s favorite peaks.  It sure is remote… though I got Verizon cellular service from the top.

View SW at dusk, across our camp spot.

There isn’t much here, except a fire ring.

At the trailhead (there is no trail).

Grant Range or Grant Wood?

Still SSE, but now we’re in bristlecone

at ~9800’.

View W to sheer cliffs that flank the SE

side of the Troy ridge.  The peak

in back is the White Pine benchmark peak.
