Dec 21, 2002: SNOW!

Here we were on top of Fortification during the winter solstice, 2002. Amy and Joel had to change Toby (not a year old) in the light snow.

Hmmmm, the weather is getting worse.

The clouds kept rolling in.

This was the year of intense spring growth in the desert. Luba looks cheerful as we head up a very non-standard route.

OK, our last trip! 100k topo. The road is now open again, and you won't have to travel quite as far from the dam as before 2004.

Because of unusual circumstances, I went up the mountain twice that day. I didn't get many pictures of the other folks.

We start out, and Toby sets a blistering pace, assuring Peggy that he knows the way.

We will head to the light-colored saddle, then climb left, then N along the wall for a bit.

Mt Wilson AZ is the sharp peak at left.

From top, snow-covered Charleston Peak in distance. Discontinuity: Christine got asthma, so I left her below the saddle, and rushed to the top.

For my normal self-portrait, I chose a bad rock; it rolled back and forth. I then put away my camera so I could run, just in time to miss taking pictures of everyone else coming up over the plateau edge.

I met Christine on the way down; she's the red dot. We then went down to the car. After 30 minutes or so at the car, I thought I might head up again; how else would I get pictures of the other folk?

I met Kim and the dogs just at the big basalt wall.

IMG_3628

Daryl and Taylor headed past me, back down S to the cars.

Next I saw Bob and Edith.

Sierra wishes Summer "Good Luck!" as SNAFU offers sage advice to Jim and Cat. I'll decide to go 15 minutes more and then I'll turn around.

IMG_3633

OK, 15 minutes more brought me to the summit again, perhaps to a slightly clearer view of Charleston.

This is where Daryl and Taylor were just 30 minutes before. It seems lonelier now.
