Sentiment for Hidden Peak (Red Rock, NV)

Harlan W.S.
Oct. 12, 2025

My first trip was a celebration of reclaimed life; my second was the "discovery" of the now-famous canyoneering route, "String of Pearls." These are a few of very many trips. I see many friends who have moved away or moved to the undiscovered country.

It has been a rough year.
I couldn't help being
sentimental, sometimes
sad, thinking of times
past on Hidden Peak.
Here's a map of a few
of the trips. The dates
are repeated below,
one border color for
each date.

This is barely legible,
  and you can barely see
it was placed by Branch
Whitney in 1997. Registers
hardly last a year now.
The top closed contour
is 6280' on the old
USGS map, but there is
10-20' of rock above that.

Notice the map at

labeled "drop-in."
This was the trip
where Lori dubbed
these pools
"String of Pearls,"
and a bit later she and
Rick I. did the first
descent.

The next month,
Feb 06, 2015, was
Barb's 65th birthday,
and we did a long
loop over Veterans
 Monument,
Hidden, Mountain
Springs Peak, and
down over Black
Velvet. Here is
where the route gets
tough.
