McFarland the Hard Way (with 2 other peaks)I
don't normally make pages for local peaks, partly because I wish to
keep some of the lesser-known routes from being trampled by the most
enthusiatic local hiking groups. But I figure this route is
sufficiently difficult that it will remain unpopular, and the first
part is on a well-used trail anyway. I also have fond memories of
when Nick N and I first went this way in 2003.
Expect about
5400' accumulated elevation gain, some class 3+ climbing. The lower
part is very brushy in places and tricky to navigate. The descent ridge
is very nasty in places with sharp steep loose talus.
