Moriah, Snake Range, NV

Via Hampton Creek: Theme Music [1], [2]

Aug. 26, 2007

This hike gains ~5000’ accumulated elevation, and takes ~15 miles roundtrip. One can camp at ~7200’ off a spur road, near the stream, at two shaded sites with picnic tables.  Most of the route is on a lightly-used trail with cairns near timberline. The last mile requires that one follow cairns up a hill, to a well-chosen herd path on the slopes of Moriah.

This 100k map shows the road (blue)

and the trail (red).  The route starts on 6/50, and heads N, just E of the gas station/bar/convenience store on the S side of the road.  The road N is officially known as the Callao Rd.  Take care to find the marked turn to Hampton, NOT the turn for Hendry’s Creek.

Looking for my contact lens.

In July of 1974, my friend Tom Fisher and I went over Lincoln Peak NH in a rainstorm, then went over many intermediate peaks, and 6 days later, went to the north over Moriah NH, near the end of an Appalachian Trail 300 mile trip.  It was a beautiful way to tie up the long hike.  We always planned to do one more backpack… but Tom died suddenly in 2004.

In July of 2007, I went over Lincoln Peak NV in a rainstorm, then 8 days later, went to the north over Moriah NV. Though 2500 miles farther west, there were many similarities.
