The red trace is from my GPS on 7-02-06; the blue trace is an earlier trip. At the end of the day, Alda and I took the shortcut down to Deer Creek while the others took the trail (blue line on the right side of map). N=Nose; F=Forehead; R=roped route; C=Chin; Tum=Tummy, the traditional "Mummy Mountain"; Toe=Mummy's Toe. |
Early morn, ~8:30AM, starting off. |
Jerry, and view SE up canyon between Nose and Forehead (right). |
Valentina 1 on short 4th class stretch. |
Alda on same. |
View NE to N Sister, as Branch heads around corner. |
I later realized that Valentina 1 was eating a cracker as she came up these cliffs. |
Alda (lower left) and Valentina 1, who did not get enough climbing that day. |
View NE from top of Forehead. Barb points to blood on my leg. |
Peppe makes fun of blood on my leg. |
View S. Now we begin the rough traverse to the Tummy |
Four of us "just" went along the ridge. In this View SSE, Nick and Luba are near end of knife-edge. Valentina and I stayed on the very top of the edge, which was made of loose, broken rock, perhaps only a foot wide; I don't recommend that. |
View NE past cliffs on E side of Nose. When we reached the col, we looked back and realized many were on a roped section (the R on the map), so we went back there to see what was going on. |

Here's Barb, view S. |
And here's Teri on the rope. |
Now I'm looking N as Judy downclimbs. |
…then Susan… |
Mark then coiled the rope and traversed. Here I give him helpful advice: "don't fall on me." |
Now we're on the Chin. View N to Forehead. |
Panoramic view S to the Tummy. Folks at L are on Chin. |
We start heading downslope. |
One of the many stretches that test the coefficient of friction of your soles. |
Climbing up the last big band of class 3 cliffs to the N edge of the Tummy. |
More of those cliffs. |
View N from edge of Tummy. We met Dave R. and Doyle R. |
Now we head down for a traverse along the NE side of Tummy. |
View SE. Traversing along wall on NE side of Tummy. |
There are lots of people in this photo. If you can't see them, look at this close-up or this one. |
Valentina and Teri on the other side of the traverse. |
Griffith Peak on right (distance). Potosi is in middle (far distance), and an unnamed part of Mummy anatomy is at left (given the position, it should remain unnamed). |
View SE to Mummy's Toe, our next destination. |
Self-portrait on Toe. Snow is visible in slides on Charleston Ridge in the background. |

Columbine with bug, in a small tributary of Deer Creek |
I pose with the distaff half of our group, at the end of the hike. I'm thirsty, and have Gatorade on my mind. |
