Jarbidge Range, as viewed from W. We went up on R side. |
The night before, as we were driving in from Rogerson (Idaho), we had this view of the range from the NE. Matterhorn, the highest peak, is at L. |
Next morn, we started up the road from the campsite. |
This is the "old" trailhead. There is no maintained trail to Matterhorn, but there is a cairn by a faint use trail. |
||
View S to Cougar Peak. |
||
Abandoned stove at 10000'. There was a lot of mining in this area. |
I waited a long time at the saddle. Bart and I both waited, until the flies drove him crazy. I continued to wait until I saw Larry, who told me the others were on lunch break... so I headed on, and found Bart was doing an optional hard stretch. |
View N from Matterhorn. |
View N, again! BIG drop off this direction. |
View S. |
Champagne for another list finish! |
View E. |
||
Steep cliffs on N side of Matterhorn. |
The other folks come down. |
Viw N to Squaretop. |
Don't slip! |
View back at Matterhorn. |
|
OK, they have caught up. |
||
Larry at on Squaretop, View S to Matterhorn. |
View N to Jumbo. |
On Jumbo, view S to Squaretop. If seen from E or W, it does look square! |
Bronco Bill (famous Jarbidge resident) had just put up this post in the morning before we arrived! |
View N to Jarbidge Peak. This would have been an easy bag, but most of the group was tired, and I opted for the route W down to the stream. Some of us had to leave that evening for Vegas! |
|
On top of Jumbo. |
Tarms NE of Jumbo. |
|
Descending ridge W of Jumbo; last chance to get snow to refresh water. |
Roses ebverywhere. |
View W at last slope above Pine Creek. |
Wild geranium - these were all over. |
Looks like lavender? |
Eric drove up to pick up Bart, so they could get an "early" start on the drive back to Vegas (Eric had a presentation at 9AM!). |
Heather and friend! |
Next morn, Susan and I drove back to Elko via the (slow) scenic western route. |
We stpped for about 15 minutes while the exasperated cowboys tried to cross the road with steers. |
We were assigned site 6 at the Spring Creek camping area. I think this sign was there 6 years back, so I guess they need to update their maps. |
View SSW via Google Earth. Next morn, we left the Hennen Canyon TH at 5:45AM, then headed SSW up the canyon. This time (vs. 2007) we went up the east side, in the col between Ruby Pyramid and Ruby Dome. |
Early in the morn, Susan slogs up. We didn't hit sun till we were at 10000'. |
Monk's Hood. |
Lots of flowers, This was just before Susan gave her boots a mud bath. |
Up. |
Lots of water. |
Griswold Lake, view to Lee Peak. |
|
Travelling up the E side of Griswold Lake, named after Clark Griswold from National Lampoon's "Vacation." |
I thought these were Parry's Primrose, but the petals are slightly different. |
|
Now we traverse over the blocky talus. |
Unnamed tarn. |
Susan heads up Ruby Dome, W from col. |
Meanwhile, I head up Ruby Pyramid for a quick tag.. |
View of Ruby Dome (W from Ruby Pyramid). |
View SE from Ruby Pyramid, to Nevada's class 5 summit. |
Polemonium (Sky Pilot) as I head up Ruby Dome. The flowers are pollinated by flies up here, and the plant tends to stink more than the equivalent in the Sierra. |
Finally I am on the top ridge of Ruby Dome; Susan is ahead. I wasn't rushing, but hit both peaks in 4 h 18m. |
|
More Polemonium. |
Pano E from Dome |
|
Now we head S back down the Dome. |
We met some folks from Ridgecrest CA, coming up with a black Lab. |
|
Thriller... |
Thriller... |
Pleasant meandering stream at top of Seitz Canyon. |
Heading back to Griswold Lake. |

One kind of penstemon. |
|
Flowers everywhere! The blue is yet another type of penstemon. |
