Google Earth view from NE. |
Our campsite at the end of Aqueduct (Cove Canyon) Road. You have to search a bit to find relatively rock-free tent sites. |
We started next morn at 5:45, made it to summit in 5h45m! |
I guess it was a bit class 3-ish in places. |
View up Cove Canyon. The vegetation in the canyon, all the way up to 9000', is incredibly thick and nasty. Do you wonder how I know? |
|
On ascent, go R (N) of this cliffy lump... |
...and go S of this little crag. |
|
At about 10000', the direct ridgeline is pretty rocky. Seven years before, I stayed N of this route, and followed an animal trail. |
At 10400'. Mt Jefferson is visible on eastern skyline. |
|
Once past the first 10650' lump on the ridge, the terrain is open and quite easy. |
Arc Dome in distance. |
|
At Summit. View ~NW. |
View ~ESE. |

Susan's pic of me as I head off to SE Summit. |
View SE from SE Summit! |
|
View E to Mt Jefferson. |
||
Now we are heading back, and I look S to SE Summit (L) and Toiyabe Dome (R). |
||
Susan's pic... we head down the blocky, almost-always-ready-to-fall talus, ready to descend 4000' in 2 miles. |
Past the landmark outcrop. |
|
Susan's pic-- yep, it was rocky. |
Poor Jen descending this loose blocky stuff. |
|
View SW back up Cove Canyon-- a big cliff with an unseen (but noisy) waterfall. |
Next day, we stop at a rest area in Carvers. There was no sign proscribing camping. |
We dropped off Jen for a meeting at the Mizpah Hotel. |
Next we stopped at the Clown Motel... |
Then the graveyard, next to the Clown Motel... |
They put fences around a lot of graves, as people are just dying to get in. |
The Belmont Mine fire had an impact on safety regulations. |
