This highly-varied volcanic ridge was first shown to me by Nick N. This is not the highpoint of the Highland range... but is nicer. You don't need to drive on bad roads to reach this hike; high clearance is good, but I have seen a van make it to a "2wd" trailhead. The main dirt roads are used for powerline up-keep, so are generally maintained. We have gone farther in when we had 4x4, but that extra driving saves minimal time. In terms of color, the best time to visit is a few days after a light rain; but remember that volcanic rock is soft and gets softer when wet. Link to trip report for Castle Peaks Ridge
